The Power of Thought Downloads: A Simple Practice for Tough Times

Writer: Shel DammannShel Dammann

Have you ever felt like your thoughts were running your life without your permission?

When tough moments hit—whether it’s stress, fatigue, or just the weight of daily life—it’s easy to spiral into emotions that feel overwhelming and unmanageable.

But what if there was a way to slow things down, witness what’s happening in your mind, and shift your perspective? That’s where the power of a simple thought download comes in.

A thought download is exactly what it sounds like—taking a minute or two to sit down and pour your thoughts onto paper. No judgment, no overanalyzing, just a raw, honest reflection of what’s running through your mind. This simple practice can be life-changing because it helps us see what’s truly happening beneath the surface.

Recently, I had a moment where my own thoughts took over in a way that caught me off guard. It was one of those heavy mental fog days where words didn’t come easily, and emotions felt tangled. My husband, sensing my struggle, gently suggested I lay down and rest. Instead of receiving his kindness, my immediate reaction was to argue, to resist, to ignore my body’s need for rest. I wrestled with my own inner dialogue, battling frustration, embarrassment, and a deep sense of unsteadiness. Even after I gave in and lay down, I still fought internally. When he later came in to check on me, rather than thanking him, I felt the urge to push him away. Shame washed over me as I realized how unhinged I felt.

But here’s what happened a few days later—I sat down with my journal and unpacked those thoughts. And I discovered something powerful. I had convinced myself that I was broken, that menopause and fatigue were stripping away my ability to function. I felt trapped inside my own mind and body. But when I laid those thoughts out in front of me, I saw the truth:

I wasn’t broken.

I was struggling, yes, but struggle doesn’t equal brokenness. I realized that I had a choice. I could continue believing the thought that I was falling apart, or I could choose a new perspective:

I can recover.

I can create a plan.

I can be proactive instead of reactive.

That shift didn’t happen in the moment of crisis—it happened after reflection, after I allowed myself to witness my thoughts and redirect them. And now, I have a plan for the next time the fog rolls in. I’ll communicate with my husband, ask for his insights, and lean into strategies that support my well-being rather than tearing myself down.

I’m sharing this with you today because we all face moments where our thoughts feel overwhelming. Your struggle may not be the same as mine, but the solution is universal:

Thought work matters.

Taking even one or two minutes to write out what’s circling in your mind can bring clarity, relief, and a new path forward.

So, I encourage you—take a moment today. Grab a notebook, a scrap of paper, or even your phone, and let the words flow. Witness your thoughts. See what patterns emerge. And then ask yourself:

Do I want to keep believing this? Or is there a better way?

You have more power over your thoughts than you think. And when you take the time to see them clearly, you open the door to real change.

I’d love to hear what you discover in your own thought download. Let me know how it goes!

Have a blessed day!
